On April 13, 2015, Águas de Jahu was commissioned to supply water and provide wastewater treatment services in the city of Jaú, in São Paulo. The city’s sewage treatment system had been operated by Grupo Águas do Brasil through Saneamento de Jaú (Sanej) since January 2009. During the concession period, Águas de Jahu will invest BRL 165 million in water system improvements, increase of sewage treatment levels and reduction of water waste.

To date, Águas de Jahu has operated the city’s Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which treats about 21 million liters per day, which is equivalent to an average of 250 liters per second. Production capacity extends to 15 wells, four of which lie in the Guarani aquifer, with an average depth of 500 meters. The wells produce more than 19 million liters per day, which amounts to 220 liters per second. The site is maintained to make sure the services are always improved.

Wastewater treatment is carried out at the Sanej Wastewater Treatment Plant, which also belongs to Grupo Águas do Brasil. The plant processes 29 million liters per day at a rate of 340 liters per second. The goal is to universalize wastewater treatment by the end of 2019.

Águas de Jahu was commissioned in the city of Jaú in April 2015. To start operations and provide world-class services to all the locals, an operational office with a stockroom was set up, and a customer service center was set up in the city center for the customers’ convenience. Brand new vehicles were purchased. A hotline service that gets toll-free calls was set up. In some areas, a touring customer service is on.

The Operational Control Center was set up to control the water supply systems in real time. It includes on and off valve switching in some pumping systems and shows reservoir levels as well.

Macrometers were installed in all production units to monitor the volume of water produced and control any waste in the distribution system. A program was started to prevent water waste by looking for non-visible leaks (using geophones), and with the help of pressure reduction valves and sectorization.

The company solved the problem of ongoing water shortage in the suburb Maria Luiza IV by refurbishing and activating the existing reservoir and setting up a pumping system and a new water main.


A kids’ area was set up at the customer service center.

Six new water mains were built: one of them interconnected the reservoirs R9/T9 and R13, benefiting the suburbs Jd. Parati and Itatiaia, and another water main was laid in the Paineiras booster, benefiting the suburbs Jd. Paineiras, Sempre Verde and BNH. A third water main, in the Café avenue, benefited those living in the Maria Cristina village.

A new water main interconnected the R2/T2 reservoirs to the RP8 reservoir and sewage pumping stations, giving flexibility to this subsystem, and a fifth one replaced the old underground piping in Jd. Conde do Pinhal and Maria Luiza II and III. A water main was replaced in Pouso Alegre and solved the problem of ongoing leaks and water supply disruptions.

New treated water pumping stations were set up to improve water supply to the suburbs Pedro Ometto and Orlando Ometto.

Twelve individual sewage treatment systems were built in Independência, ensuring the best solution to the final destination of waste.

A macrometer was installed at the T9 reservoir, benefiting the suburbs Jd. Ameriquinha, Jd. Pires de Campos, Conjunto Residencial Bernardi, Condomínio Jd. Alvorada, Vila dos Comerciários and Villagio di Roma.


Activation of the P3P well in Potunduva ensured continuous supply to the locals. The district had 2,280 liters per minute available and the P3P well has a capacity of 1,680 liters of water per minute, which further improves the water supply to the residents.

An untreated sewage pumping station was set up in the suburb Concha de Ouro and the old drop box was decommissioned, making it unnecessary to collect and transport the sewage, which was a nuisance for the population.

A new 50,000-liter water reservoir was built in Vila Ribeiro to better serve the residents, as the area had a single unit for 25,000 liters. Water distribution was improved as well.

A macrometer was installed at the reservoir T2 outflow valve, benefiting the suburbs of Jardim Santa Helena, Jardim Odete, Jardim Sanzovo, Chácara Flora, 1ª e 2ª Zona Industrial, Vila Nova Jaú, Vila Industrial, Jardim Concha de Ouro, Jardim Estádio, Jardim Maria Luiza I, Jardim Maria Luiza II, Jardim Maria Luiza III, Jardim Maria Luiza IV, Jardim Conde do Pinhal I and Jardim Maria Luiza IV.

The whole city is supplied with treated water.

Águas de Jahu has only one Wastewater Treatment Plant — the Sanej WWTP — that uses an innovative technology called CASS — cyclic activated sludge system by batch operation. The system ensures greater operational efficiency, takes a smaller area compared to conventional plants, and minimizes odors. The treatment is biological, i.e., it does not use chemicals.

The modern system allows the removal of up to 95% of biological matter and pollution, which is higher than the rate of 82% required by law.

By using this system, Sanej placed Jaú in a pioneering position among Brazilian cities that have sorted out their basic issues, standing out among the leading towns in terms of sanitation in Brazil.
