Águas do Paraíba

On September 14, 1999, Águas do Paraíba was tasked with supplying water and treating the wastewater produced in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, in Rio de Janeiro.

At the time, the wastewater was not treated and the water supply system had a flow rate of 600 liters per second (l/s).

About 80% of the wastewater is treated and 99% of the population has access to treated water.

Six wastewater treatment plants and sixteen water treatment plants have been built. Taken together, they treat about 85 million liters of water per day. The goal is to universalize wastewater treatment in the coming years.

Águas do Paraíba is the first and only utility in the state of Rio de Janeiro to win the National Sanitation Quality Award (PNQS-2010) of the Brazilian Association of Environmental Engineering and Sanitation (ABES) and to be granted the ISO 9001 Quality Certification in 2001 and 2008. In 2015, the utility was considered the fourth best city among the largest cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, the company was also ranked first in the Sustainability Award of the Brazilian Union of Private Water and Wastewater Utilities (SINDCON), in the Technical category, with the “Água Certa Program — Optimization of water consumption in the supply system,” which is responsible for preventing physical and apparent water waste. Besides that, it was the winner of the Isto É Dinheiro magazine ranking “The Best of the Middle Market.”

Over 16 years of concession, the company has invested more than BRL 20 million in the city and intends to invest over BRL 20 million in 2016. By 2018, Campos dos Goytacazes is expected to provide wastewater collection and treatment for all households in its jurisdiction. In January 2016, the seventh wastewater treatment plant — the Esplanada WWTP — will be built, and the Guarus plants, with a current processing capacity of 90 liters per second, will have a twofold increase in size. The city’s largest wastewater treatment plant, Paraíba WWTP, will have its capacity doubled to 400 liters of sewage per second.

1999

Águas do Paraíba started operations in Campos dos Goytacazes on September 14, 1999.

2000

The first water treatment plant was started in São Sebastião and it also supplies water to the district of Poço Gordo. This has come to solve the problem of excess iron in the water, which was chronic in both locations.

2001

The utility started up the second water production and treatment plant in Boa Vista to serve Farol de São Thomé, the city’s largest coastal area, Petrobras’ new site of services and facilities. The system includes four deep wells that produce 100 liters of water per second.

2002

Coroa, also known as ETA-1, the city’s main water treatment plant, was completely revamped and expanded. In 2002, its water production capacity was doubled from 600 to 1200 liters per second. The plant was fully automated and was equipped with a remote Operational Control Center. It is one of the largest and most complex plants in Rio de Janeiro.

2003

While it expanded the water supply system in the city and in the rural areas and recovered and expanded the water production and treatment units (15 in total), in 2003, it started building the first wastewater treatment plant in the city — after 100 years without investments to that end.

2004

The fourth new water treatment plant built by Águas do Paraíba started operations in 2004, in Donana. The plant supplies water to Donana, Travessão and Tocos. It is strategically located to provide better services to the districts of Penha, Nova Penha and Novo Jockey. The utility implemented the first wastewater treatment plant in the city — the Chatuba WWTP. With tertiary level treatment, the plant is one of the most modern and complex in the country, as it removes more than 97% of impurities from waste, returning clean decontaminated water to nature.

2005 and 2006

In 2005 and 2006, the priorities were expanding the sewer system and enlarging and automating the sewage pumping systems — which were only 20 and now there are more than 150 — which are key to the efficient collection and pumping of waste in a flat-land city that is only 14 meters above sea level.

2007

Continuing with investments in wastewater systems, in 2007, the second wastewater treatment plant of Campos was started in Guarus, on the left bank of the Paraíba do Sul river. It is a secondary level unit. It has an aerobic and anaerobic system and sufficient space for expansions, as it may be required in the main sub-district of Campos.

2008

Águas do Paraíba started the city’s third wastewater treatment plant. It is located in the Codin Industrial District. The WWTP, named after the area, serves both the factories around it and the surrounding low-income population.

2009

Three major constructions marked the year of 2009, when the utility completed 10 years of operation: startup of the Imperial Water Treatment Plant; startup of a large water capacity reservoir in Guarus and water supply to the district of Travessão, which receives water from the Coroa WWTP through a 13-km water main. On August 24, 2009, as established by the Local Government of Campos dos Goytacazes, Águas do Paraíba was tasked with cleaning the city’s septic tanks. Águas do Paraíba finishes the construction of the second large water capacity reservoir at the entrance to the city, near the BR 101 highway.

2010

The year 2010 had important achievements in store for the company. In addition to the BRL 120 million invested in recent years, a further BRL 100 million was announced. Also in 2010, Campos’ fifth wastewater treatment plant was started in Donana. Also in 2010, Águas do Paraíba was Rio de Janeiro’s first and only sanitation company to receive the National Sanitation Quality Award from the Brazilian Association of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering.

2011

In 2011, the third giant water reservoir, with capacity for 2 million liters of water, was started in Penha, boosting supply to the southern area of ​​the city and to the areas of Tapera and Ururaí. More than 50 km of sewer pipes were laid.

2012

Investments in wastewater treatment continue to go up. In that year, another 60 km of sewer pipes were laid. On the city’s anniversary, March 28th, the city’s sixth wastewater treatment plant was put into operation. With the Paraíba WTP in Matadouro, Campos dos Goytacazes became the first city in Rio not to dump untreated wastewater in the Paraíba do Sul river.

2013

The year began with the constructions of the seventh wastewater treatment plant of Campos, the Esplanada WWTP. In addition to Esplanada, the WWTP will serve the suburbs Parque Nova Brasília, Pecuária, Julião Nogueira and Condomínio Nashville.

Also in 2013, the following constructions took place: a sewage system was built around Jockey and in neighboring areas; five other sewage pumping stations were built; installation of the first biodigester (Terra Prometida); running of a water main from the Saldanha Marinho Street to the Presidente Kennedy Avenue; the second module of the Paraíba WWTP was built; startup of a water main in Santa Rosa; replacement of water and sewage systems in the Historic Town; construction of a sewage system at the Arthur Bernardes Avenue (2nd stage) and another 10 km of water pipelines and 60 km of sewage pipelines: “Morar Feliz” Project — Ururaí; replacement and expansion of a water system at Nazário Pereira Gomes Avenue; replacement of the RJ 216 highway water main (suburbs of Santo Antônio/Donana).

2014

Águas do Paraíba extended and replaced 20 km worth of water pipelines and delivered two new water connections in the suburbs of Parque Tocos, Fundão, Vila Olímpica, Rodoviário, Morar Feliz Ururai, Morar Feliz, Dores de Macabu, Travessão, Farol de São Thomé, Estancia, Estancia da Penha, Guarus, Flamboyant, Morar Feliz Ponta Grossa, Niterói, Santa Rosa, Morar Feliz Santo Eduardo, Rui Barbosa, Esplanada, Lebret, Morar Feliz, Saturnino Braga and Tapera.

The utility replaced water meters in many suburbs of Campos dos Goytacazes and built four 3.5-km water mains in Parque Jockey, Solar da Penha, Guarus and Morar Feliz Ururaí.

The company also invested in the collection and treatment of wastewater, as in the upgrade of the Paraíba Wastewater Treatment Plant, two 36 km extensions of sewer pipelines in Parque Jockey, Pecuária, Rui Barbosa, Morar Feliz Ururaí, Parque Nova Brasília, Guarus, Barão do Rio Branco, João Seixas, Califórnia, Esplanada, Vicente Gonçalves Dias and Julião Nogueira. Furthermore, Águas do Paraíba built three other sewage connections in Parque Jockey, Pecuária, Rui Barbosa, Morar Feliz Ururai, Parque Nova Brasília, Guarus, Barão do Rio Branco, João Seixas, Califórnia, Esplanada, Vicente, Gonçalves Dias and Julião Nogueira.

The utility also built four pumping stations, five interceptors, and built another six pressurized lines in the area.

2015

Águas do Paraíba extended and replaced a 5.2-km water pipeline in Tapera (60%), including other neighboring suburbs. The company delivered new water connections to 3,000 households in the city, replaced water meters, and built four 2.5-km water mains in Santa Rosa and Rodoviário.

The utility also invested in wastewater collection and treatment, such as upgrading the Paraíba WWTP, completing two 14 km sewer pipe extensions, three new sewage connections in 14,000 households and building four other pumping stations to increase the Paraíba WWTP flow in the city.

Águas do Paraíba also built four pumping stations, five interceptors and six other pressurized lines in the area.

2016

Águas do Paraíba added another 7,800 meters to the water main, 3,500 meters of which are for Ururaí and 4,300 meters for Alphaville. The utility also has 15,000 meters of water distribution pipelines in a range of suburbs, including Tapera, Jardim Boa Vista and Parque Pomares.

 

Water supply to 52 suburbs was included in the scope of the concession agreement. The project consists of expanding/improving the water system of 52 suburbs of Campos dos Goytacazes. The company delivered flow and water quality surveys, installation of water meters, renovations, installation and upgrades to filters, installation of pumps, automation, pipeline extensions, construction of plants.

All of these jobs correspond to interventions that will guarantee services to new users, due to the population growth and the consequent development of the real estate business in the company’s area of operation.

 

The company also invested in the collection and treatment of wastewater, kicking off the 1st stage of the Esplanada wastewater treatment plant with capacity for 90 l/s. Also, 25 km were added to the sewage system in Guarus, como Cidade Luz, Parque Santa Rosa, Parque Guarus, Parque Lebret, Parque São Silvestre, Parque Prazeres, Parque Fundão, Parque Custodópolis, and in the suburbs Parque Saraiva and Parque Varanda do Visconde.

 

2017 — The utility invested in the construction and replacement of over 40 kilometers of water pipelines in Parque Pomares, Boa Vista, Vila Manhães, Porto Belo, Cidade Verde, Vila Industrial, Tapera, Boa Vista and Travessão. It also built better water transport facilities to carry water to Guarus, in Parque São Matheus, and Parques Nova Brasília and Pecuária. Another important investment was the interconnection of a 500-mm water main from the Goytacazes Street to Presidente Kennedy Avenue, boosting supply to Jockey, Flamboyant and nearby areas. In the sewage operations, it continued construction activities on the Esplanada WWTP and started building the Lagoa do Vigário Treatment Plant. In ​​technology, Águas do

Paraíba increased the number of automated sewage pumping stations to 65; it installed solar panels in unpowered areas to measure water consumption, and dozens of remote sensors to check water flow in water mains.

The city of Campos dos Goytacazes is supplied by several water systems. The Santo Eduardo/Santa Maria system catches water from the Itabapoana river. The water supplied to Morro do Côco, Murundu, Vila Nova, Donana/Goytacazes/Tocos, Beco de Santo Antônio, Dores de Macabu, Sebastião/Poço Gordo, Saturnino Braga and Boa Vista is taken from deep water tables. The Conselheiro Josino system takes water from the Penha stream and the Morangaba system takes water from the Preto river.

The water distributed through the Ponta Grossa system supplies the suburbs of Ponta Grossa dos Fidalgos and Canto do Engenho and is taken from the Feia Lagoon. The Coroa System, which serves the main district and the district of Ururaí, takes water from the Paraíba do Sul river. The water supply system of Águas do Paraíba serves about 390,000 people in Campos dos Goytacazes.

Águas do Paraíba has six Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP). The first plant to be put into operation in Campos dos Goytacazes was the Chatuba WWTP, one of the most modern in the country, which ensures 97% removal of impurities from waste.
