Águas de Juturnaíba

In March 1998, the utility Águas de Juturnaíba was commissioned to take care of water distribution and wastewater collection and treatment in the cities of Araruama, Saquarema and Silva Jardim, in Região dos Lagos, state of Rio de Janeiro.

At that time, only 0,7% of the population had their wastewater treated and the water supply system had a flow rate of 600 liters per second (l/s).

Today, 98,6% of the population has access to treated water, and 72,6% of the wastewater is treated.

To date, the Juturnaíba WTP has had its water treatment capacity increased from 600 to 1,100 l/s, meaning 95 million liters per day. Six wastewater treatment units have been built and are now processing 25 million liters per day.

Of the six plants, two (Araruama and Silva Jardim) use the wetland type treatment system. The process reproduces the natural cycles, using wastewater as a source of nutrients to the plants, allowing its return to the environment to be properly done, and generating a properly processed effluent.

The Ponte dos Leites WWTP is the largest Wastewater Treatment Plant in Latin America that uses the wetland system. The plant stands out for using elements of nature in the wastewater treatment process and features an area of ​​environmental preservation. The WWTP was started in 2005 and, in February 2009, it had its wastewater treatment capacity increased from 100 to 200 liters per second.

In Araruama, the company maintains a socio-environmental project in collaboration with the weaving cooperative “Nós na Trama,” which transforms umbrella papyrus plants from the wastewater treatment plant into handmade gifts used by Águas de Juturnaíba and the Group.

The company also invests waste composting to generate organic fertilizer and, in a partnership with the Kaapora Farm, it provides raw material for small-scale manufacturing of paper and decorative wall tiles.

Since 2011, it has forged some important partnerships with the local authorities to develop projects like the “Horta Escola,” a nursery where children from local public schools can experience the planting and growing of produce at the Juturnaíba WTP.

Over 50 years of concession, the company plans to invest more than BRL 400 million in the city. By 2023, it expects that 90% of the wastewater produced in town be treated and a hundred percent of the urban areas be supplied with drinking water. Águas de Juturnaíba plans to expand its six WWTPs to increase the volume and level of treatment, build new wastewater plants and expand and implement Wastewater Collection and Pumping Systems.

1998

The utility company Águas de Juturnaíba started operations on March 16, 1998, in the cities of Araruama, Saquarema and Silva Jardim. The company’s main office was set up in Araruama.

2001

In October 2001, Águas de Juturnaíba was commissioned to operate the sewage system of Araruama and was tasked with taking care of the existing sewers.

2006

The Bacaxá Wastewater Treatment Plant was commissioned in 2006 to support the improvement of the Saquarema Lagoon. The sewage works scheduled to start in 2008 were kicked off earlier. The results could be seen with the improvement of the Araruama and in Saquarema Lagoons’ cleanliness, the Bacaxá WWTP startup and the construction of a water main to interconnect the Araruama reservoir to the Bacaxá booster, carrying treated water to Saquarema.

With 85% of the city supplied with water on a 24×7 basis, Águas de Juturnaíba started its construction program in the following suburbs: Boqueirão, Barra Nova, Gravatá, Retiro, Rio D’areia, Porto da Roça, Raia and Verde Vale.

2007

Early in the year, Águas de Juturnaíba finished off its water supply lines, taking treated water to Vilatur.

2008

Twenty-five kilometers of water pipelines were laid. This year, in the sewage operations, Araruama received the Ponte dos Leites WWTP pumping station, and the Ponte dos Leites WWTP was interconnected to the Wetland. In Saquarema, four pumping stations were set up and over 200 meters of sewage pipelines were laid. In Silva Jardim, 500 internal sewage connections were interconnected to the existing public lines. A major construction work in the city in that year was the Caju WWTP, equipped with the wetland treatment system.

2009

Twenty-five kilometers of water pipelines were laid in the region. The Ponte dos Leites WWTP capacity was increased from 150 to 200 liters per second. In the same year, the Saquarema WWTP had its capacity increased by 15 liters per second. Two pumping stations were set up in Itaúna and interconnected to the treatment plant pumping stations. In Silva Jardim, 550 sewers were connected to the wastewater collection pipes, the Cidade Nova pumping station was renovated and interconnected to the system, and the Caju WWTP had a few operational improvements.

2010

Five pumping stations were built in Araruama in 2010, totaling 27 stations in the city.

Fifty-one dry weather diversions were installed in Araruama and one in Lagoinha, in the suburb of Saquarema. The Araruama sewage system was expanded by 7.6 km.

The Araruama water system was expanded by 12.6 km, the Saquarema one by 9.2 km and the Silva Jardim system by 4.5 km.

2011

The company built a sewage pumping station in Saquarema and three in Araruama, which also received a 1.2-km expansion of its sewage system.

The Araruama water distribution system was expanded by 12.3 km, the Saquarema one by 8 km, and the Silva Jardim one by 5.3 km.

2012

Two sewage pumping stations were built in Silva Jardim, increasing the number of stations to eight.

The water distribution system was expanded by 35 km in Araruama, 7.6 km in Saquarema and 3.9 km in Silva Jardim.

2013

Two other sewage pumping stations were built in Silva Jardim, totaling 10.

The Silva Jardim sewage collection and water distribution systems were expanded in Silva Jardim, the Araruama water distribution system was expanded by 10 km and in Saquarema it was expanded by 4.7 km.

A new laboratory of bacteriological, physical and chemical analyses was set up to analyze both water and wastewater samples.

2014

In Araruama, in the Novo Horizonte suburb, 4 km of sewage collection pipelines and 2 km of pressurized lines were set up. Eight dry weather diversions and nine sewage pumping stations were built. In Praia Seca, 10 km of sewer pipes were laid.
At the Ponte dos Leites Wastewater Treatment Station, in Araruama, six biodigesters were built to handle the treatment of waste from vacuum trucks.

Five kilometers of water distribution pipes were laid in Araruama, 11 km in Saquarema and 1 km in Silva Jardim.

2015

In the city of Araruama, in the Praia Seca suburb, 6 km of sewage pipes were laid.

In Saquarema, in the suburbs of Areal, Boqueirão and Gravatá, 6 km of sewage pipes were laid, five sewage pumping stations were built and 19 dry weather diversions were set up.

In the city of Silva Jardim, in the suburb of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, 3 km of sewage pipes were laid, one pumping station was built and 209 household sewer connections were completed. Besides that, 600 meters of sewage collection pipes were laid and 14 household sewer connections were executed in Alpheno Corrêa de Melo Street.

A 300-mm thick 204-meter long water main was set up in São Vicente, 40 km worth of water distribution pipes were laid in Araruama, 10 km in Saquarema and 1 km in Silva Jardim.

2016

In the Central region of Araruama, the sewage system was redesigned. Eight kilometers of pressurized lines and 1.5 km of sewage pipes were set up. Five sewage pumping stations were built and three others were expanded. In Silva Jardim, suburb of Caju, the Caju Wetland was upgraded.

Eleven kilometers of water distribution pipes were implemented in Araruama and 6 km in Saquarema.

At the Juturnaíba WTP, an automatic chemical dispensing and quality monitoring system was set up to increase operation efficiency and reliability.

 

2017

 

A 75-mm 3.2 km long pressurized line was set up, three dry weather diversions and three sewage pumping stations were installed in the suburbs of Raia, Condado and Retiro, in Saquarema.

 

In the Caju suburb in Silva Jardim, 4.8 km of sewage collection pipes and 440 meters of pressurized lines were laid and two pumping stations were built. In the households, 371 sewer connections were completed.
